Val joined the firm following a clerkship at the Idaho Supreme Court with Justice Gregory Moeller. She grew up in Kuna before attending Boise State University where she received the Silver Medallion, the highest academic honor at BSU. At Columbia University, she earned a Master of Public Health, later working as a Research Scientist and Public Health Epidemiologist for the New York City Health Department. In 2007, she graduated from the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa with a Master of Fine Arts. After teaching at the college level for several years, Val attended the University of Idaho College of Law where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Idaho Law Review and graduated summa cum laude. During law school, she externed for the Honorable B. Lynn Winmill and the Capital Habeas Unit of the Federal Defenders of Idaho.
